The beginning of the violent Sunni radicalism was when some rulers believed that there needed to be a known difference, because some people believed that they need to emphasize the Sunni views that tend to be more intolerant of Shiites.

answer: When Ayatollah Khomeini swept the Shah of Iran from power he claimed to be the leader of the entire Muslim world not just the Shiite Iran and the Sunni's did not feel this way at all. Some of the Sunni's made sure everyone knew the differences between Sunni and the Shiite and this radical group came about that was aggresive and violent and this radical group was very important in the Iran-Iraq War.

The reasons that the Sunni took violent actions were because of Khomeini's announcing himself the leader of the whole Muslim world. This then triggered many actions that the Sunni carried out, like many Sunni fundamentalist groups.

Sunni's ceased the Mosque in Mecca and then Ayatollah Khomeini took over. Soon suunis resisted Khomeini because they saw him as a shia leader. Some sunni leaders sought to win over the arabs. New and more dangerous sunni fundamentalist groups were formed.

The Sunni people resist the notion that Kohmeini being the center of the Muslim world. Some Sunni leaders empahzied the differences between Sunnis and Shiites to win over the wider Arab public. They talked about more radical SUnni views that are move intolerant of Shiites. Sunni fundamentalism since 1920's is more violent and aggressive.
