Shiite Islam Extra credit!

As promised, here is an opportunity to earn some extra credit.
I am going to post a different question relative to each part of NPR's five part series on Shiite Islam which you can listen to here.

Today's questions:

1. Recall the video on the Hajj, what do all Muslims agree to before entering Mecca?

2. what is the Hidden Imam and why do Sunni's believe it is an afront to Islam?

Good Luck!

1. All muslums agree to wash their hands and feet before entering the hajj. Every muslum must make at least one trip to the hajj. Everyone agrees to do that too.

1. All the Muslims agreed that Mecca would be an all Muslim City. 2. A Hidden Imam is the coming of the Messiah, and the Sunni's beleive in their one god and they don't think a human leader should be spirtually worshipped as a God.

1. answer: A Muslim must first make a niyyah (international intention to God) to do Hajj. Also every Muslim is suppose to go to Mecca at least once in their lifetime.
2. answer: The Shiites believe in the Hidden Imam or the 12th Imam (leader) and his name is Mohammed and he disappeared in 874 when he was 5 and the Shiites believe that he is the Messiah and will return
and he will return to a radical Islam so they are trying to conquer as many places as they can so that when he returns they rule the land. The Sunni's think that the Shiites have made the Hidden Imam like a Messiah and made this Imam almost divine like and it is one of the fundamental differences between the two groups.
Of course the Sunni are the majority and the political power but the Shiites live in the area that is where the oil is. Their differences cause fighting and they have been fighting for centuries. I think this is very confusing no wonder most everybody does not know anything about all this.

1) They agree that they will not comit any acts of violence and that they believe in Mahamud....

2) The Hidden Imam is a person who is supposed to be desendant of Muhamed and it is taken as an afront because the Sunnis believe that anyone cold be the leader of islam, not just Muhamads desendants.....

Before entering Mecca, Muslims agree to bathe and wear certain clothing. Men are required to wear an Ihram, which is two sheets of white unhemmed cloth, draped on and then secured with a white sash. The Ihram shows equality among all of the pilgrims. It also symbolizes purity, the absolution of sins, and portrays simplicity. For shoes, the men wear sandals. The females, on the other hand, wear a simple white or black dress with a head covering. Women, though, need to have a letter written by a male relative, giving them permission to go on the Hajj to the Saudi government. The Hidden Imam is Muhammad al-Mahdi, or the Messiah, who, just like Jews, the Shiites are waiting for to come. The Hidden Imam is the 12th Imam who was taken into hiding by God in the 10th century and will come back at the end of time. The people who believe in the Hidden Imam are called the Twelver Shiites, and they are the majority of the Shiites in the world today.

Rachel C. period 1

number 1.
If you're a non-Muslim you can't travel to Mecca, you cannot participate in the Hajj. To become a Muslim to participate in the Hajj, you would have to get a certificate from a Moqsque, and have it signed by him.

number 2.
The Hidden Imam is one of the twelve Shi'i. Sunnis do not believe in him, they think he is afront to Islam, but Shiites say he is the "core of the Shiite religious world." His name was Muhammad al Manhdi. He was hidden since birth and disappeared into a well to aviod his father's and grandfather's sad fate.
