The song was inspired by a 1979 elementary school shooting in San Diego, CA. The crime was committed by a 16-year-old girl who provided no explanation other than "I don't like Mondays" for her actions.

The lead singer, Bob Geldof, was given honorary knighthood for his efforts in activism, which led to the charity concerts known as Live Aid, held in London and Philadelphia in 1985.

The event that inspired the song "I don't like Mondays," by the Boomtown Rats was that a woman living in San Diego randomly started shooting at children playing on a playground across the street from her house. She killed 2 adults and injured several children and a police officer. When people asked her why she did it she said, "I don't like Mondays."

The lead singer, Bob Geldof, was knighted because of his involvement in Live Aid, a charity event raising money for the starvation in Africa.

A 16-year-old's shooting spree (at kids on a playground!) inspired The Boomtown Rats to write this song, because the woman's reason for the shooting was, "I don't like Mondays."

The lead singer, Sir Bob Gedolf, was knighted because he donated over 150 million pounds to famine relief in Africa.

"I Don't Like Mondays"

On Monday January 29, 1979, a young woman by the name of Brenda Spencer committed a horrible act. Out of something so trivial as boredom, she began to shoot at children at a san Diego elementary school across the street from her house. She killed two men, the principal and a custodian. The weapon of choice was a rifle her father had given her as a gift.

Even more shocking was her answer to why she did it. Her first response, to a reporter, "I don't like Mondays. This livens up the day." Later she went on to the police, "There was no reason for it, and it was just a lot of fun."

It is shocking that a reason as trivial as boredom would drive 16-year-old Brenda to kill and injury several people. Is it truly possible that human conscious couldn't stop this act.

The lead singer, Bob Geldorf, was later knighted for producing and being the driving force behind LiveAid concerts, and his devotion to feeding the hungry.

The song was inspired by the shooting spree of Brenda Ann Spencer, who fired at children in a school playground across the street from her home when she was 16 years old. Her only explanation was that she just didn't like Mondays, and that the shootings livened up the day.

Bob Geldof was given honorary knighthood for organizing the Live Aid concert in the 1980's.

Geldof wrote the song after reading a telex report on the shooting spree of 16-year-old Brenda Ann Spencer, who fired at children playing in a school playground across the street from her home in San Diego, California. She killed two adults and injured eight children and one police officer. Spencer showed no remorse for her crime, and her explanation for her actions was "I don't like Mondays."[1] The song was first performed less than a month later at the Fox Theatre, San Diego.[2]

During the broadcast of Live Aid, Geldof shocked viewers into giving cash by slamming his fist on the table and practically ordering them not to go out to the pub, but to stay in and watch the show. The harrowing video of dying, skeletal children that had been made to the tune of "Drive" by The Cars, contributed to the concert's success.

In total, Live Aid raised over £150 million for famine relief. Geldof was subsequently knighted, at age 34, for his efforts. His autobiography, written soon after with Paul Vallely, was entitled Is That It?.[11]
^that is why he was knighted^

The song "I Don't Like Mondays" by The Boomtown Rats is about the shooting spree of then sixteen-year-old Branda Ann Spencer. She kiled two people and wounded nine, eight of whom were children, and then famously said, "I don't like Mondays," to explain her actions. It was a UK number one hit for four weeks in 1979.

The lead singer, Bob Geldof, was knighted for raising over 150 million pounds for famine relief.
